DESCRIPTION:CHSA is ringing the Lunar New Year with a very special Year of the Snake celebration on Sunday\, February 2\, 2025. Admission will be free for all attendees during museum hours. \nAs the Year of the Snake slides in\, we welcome the dynamic opportunity learn from the past and move forward with wisdom\, awareness\, transformation\, and compassion. \nJoin CHSA for a day of festivities that will feature arts and crafts\, interactive games\, cultural performances and demonstrations\, complimentary snacks\, and more during this community celebration with family and friends.Programming includes: \n– Year of the Snake arts & crafts\n– Frank Wong miniature exhibit scavenger hunt\n– Lion dance performance by Wong Gar Hung Keun\n– Artist merchandise table (Lori Chinn)\n– Traditional calligraphy demonstration with artist He Wen Tang (湯賀文)\n– Community resources table featuring SF Planning\n\n\nThere will also be Lunar New Year refreshments and snacks\, prizes and giveaways\, along with Year of the Snake red envelopes available. \nAdmission includes complimentary access to exhibits: We Are Bruce Lee\, Chinese in the Richmond\, and the Frank Wong miniatures collection. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you soon to welcome the Year of the Snake!

DESCRIPTION:In bringing Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month to a close\, CHSA presents a panel discussion about certificates of residence during the exclusion era of the U.S. Chinese residents were mandated to carry these certificates as proof of legal entry and the right to remain in the country. \nThis presentation with Connie Young Yu addresses the “paper trail” of Chinese exclusion and the documentation of Chinese American history. They will discuss the Geary Act Project\, a history archival project aimed at collecting public Geary Act certificates of residence\, or “yellow cards\,” kept by descendants of Chinese pioneers and “persons other than laborer.” The purpose of the Project is to reveal a hidden chapter in American history about an unconstitutional act toward a race of people\, with far reaching consequences: for truth and justice\, for today\, for all. \nThe program moderated by Chuck McClain will include a discussion with keynote speaker Gordon Chang\, professor of the first Asian American history course at Stanford University and author of “Ghosts of Gold Mountain\, The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad.” Gordon will recount the journey of Asian American studies and the importance of archiving and documentation. \nDoors will open at 12:30pm.\nProgram starts at 1pm. \nEvent Media Recap\nThank you for being part of our event!
