The purpose of this family festival is to organize a community event that promotes Chinatown’s small businesses\, deep history\, and live culture by attracting new visitors to our festive community; welcome old visitors who have not been to Chinatown for a long time; and unify the community by offering community involvement. \nSpecifically\, this event is a cultural learning experience where people can learn about the cultural significance such as lion dance competition/performances\, Chinese Martial Arts performances\, Chinese musical\, Chinese herbal and medical healing consultation\, Chinese paintings\, Tao culture\, and children learning and demonstration area. This family cultural festival will provide a learning experience to Chinatown visitors and locals to appreciate the deep history and culture of San Francisco’s Chinatown since 1848. Our Goal is to attract more people by teaching the community and its visitors about the cultural significance\, to add 30% of revenue to the businesses by providing visitors and returning shoppers a festive environment to enjoy\, and to learn\, to engage\, and to discover the deep history that San Francisco’s Chinatown has to offer. \nThe objective is to bring a festive environment to San Francisco’s Chinatown\, especially\nas the community and its businesses recover from the detrimental effects of the COVID 19 pandemic. Many businesses on Grant Avenue (the main street for Chinatown’s retail businesses) have been closed down since the beginning of the pandemic. Not only will these festivities bring visitors back to the community and its businesses\, it will also be a cultural learning experience for all. \nEvent details:\n– Lion Dance Performances: One block will be dedicated to lion dance performances\,\nwhich will feature teams from across the Bay Area. The performance will be held in the\nmorning and will be open to the public. \n– Chinese Herbal and Tit Tar Free Consultation: One block will be dedicated to free\nconsultations with herbalists and Tit Tar practitioners. Visitors will have the opportunity\nto learn about traditional Chinese medicine and receive free consultations. \n– Chinese performing arts\, art exhibitions\, Chinese Railroad Panel Exhibition: One\nblock will be dedicated to arts including performing\, painting\, and panel exhibition \n– Children’s Activities: One block will be dedicated to children’s activities\, including\npainting\, calligraphy\, and promoting Chinese surnames\, the display of fire dragon and\nparading after dark.. This block will also feature a playing and learning area for children. \n– Entertainment Stage: One block will be dedicated to entertainment\, including kung fu\nperformances\, singings\, and musical instruments \n– Responders: One block will be dedicated to first responders\, including fire engines\,\nmarshalls\, sheriffs\, and the San Francisco Fire Department. Visitors will have the\nopportunity to learn about the important work these first responders do and see their\nequipment up close. \nEvent timeline:\nCultural Activities: 11:30 – 3:30 on Grant Avenue. Calligraphy\, painting\, performances\, lion dance\, musical and martial arts exhibitions. Free Chinese Medicine Doctor Consultation. \nParade starting 1:30 Grant Ave and Broadway. \nIn celebration of AAPI Heritage Month\, CHSA along with the Chinatown History & Culture Association present Cultural Festival In Chinatown. The festival includes a CHSA-produced Chinese American Stories series of discussions\, exhibits\, and movies at Victory Hall\, 827 Stockton Street: \nCHSA pop-up exhibits (1-5:30pm): \n\nCALLED TO RISE: highlighting Chinese American GIs in the China-Burma-India Theater and WWII.\nDETAINED AT LIBERTY’S DOOR: tracing the formation of the Angel Island Immigration Station and the inspiring story of Mrs. Lee Yoke Suey.\n\nPanel presentations (1:30-2:30pm): \n\nConversation With My Grandparents\, presented by Ron Chan: One man’s AI conversations with his deceased grandparents.\nChinese American Families and the Long-term Impact of Chinese Exclusion Laws\, presented by Anna Eng.\nOur Moms: Chinese G.I. War Brides\, presented by Leona Lau.\n\nFilm screening (3-5pm): \n\nLingering Dream of Homeland: Family story of Chaoyang\, an elderly Taishanese “huaqiao” (overseas Chinese) man who brings his American-born-Chinese grandson back to his ancestral home.\n\nLink to Trailer: Lingering Dream of Homeland \nThis family event is a cultural festival that will provide a unique opportunity for people of all backgrounds to learn about and celebrate Chinese culture.
